A week in Montana at the Society of Conservation Biology Conference

What an incredible week for us in Montana! Over 1000 scientists, students, advocates and journalists gathered at the University of Montana for a week of thrilling conversations, debates and presentations about conservation biology at 2014 North American Congress for Conservation Biology hosted by the Society of Conservation Biology. The theme of the conference was about breaking down barriers within the conservation world. At the conference, Dr. Tonkyn, Carmony Adler Corley, a Clemson T4T graduate, and I were accepted to give a presentation to talk about the formation of the National Tigers for Tigers Coalition and Tigers for Tigers.

Dr. Tonkyn and I attended a variety of presentations about policy, science communication, education and human-wildlife conflict. It was a fantastic experience and it was great to meet and form relationships with many tiger biologists, conservationists and journalists from around the world.

Many people were trilled to learn more about the National Tigers for Tigers Coalition and the efforts that we have initiated across the country. With some individuals, I only needed to say three words, “Tigers, mascots and conservation,” before there was a massive grin across their face. They got it immediately! It just fuels my passion and drive for the opportunities presented before us. I know that our students across the country are doing amazing work to make an impact within their communities and I cannot wait for the fall to arrive! I can’t wait to share these experiences with all of them.

Go tigers,

Sean Carnell
National Coordinator
